After your bankruptcy has been discharged no matter whether it is a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the last thing you want to do is the start to run into financial difficulty again by racking up credit charges. One thing that you do want to do however, is get your credit report straightened out.

Chances are because of the financial situation you have been in you have a really poor credit score but at the same time you want to make sure that any and all errors that have appeared on your credit report have been removed.

Possibly you have used your credit report as a source of information for you to determine what all of your financial responsibilities were so you were able to list them on your bankruptcy petition. Either way you need a copy of your report so that you can check it to ensure that there are no errors. Your bankruptcy will appear on your credit report and it can remain there for up to 10 years.

You also have the option to have the balance of each of the creditors that are listed on your report reduced to zero provided they have been addressed in your bankruptcy. The history of the delinquent payments that you made can still remain on there but the balance must show as zero.

If you come across any information that is not correct you have the right to contact the credit bureau and dispute the error. You can speak to your New Albany bankruptcy lawyer as to what the proper steps are to get your credit report in proper shape. Then in the future as you become more financially stable you can begin to build your credit once again.
